The Eneviy's Depredations in Fau£uier correspondent of the Richmond Enquirer, writing from Warrenton, Va, April 19, says: The enemy made their appearance in W’^arrenton on the 6th instant, a short time after you left, in large force—one division, commanded by Geary, of 2,600, the other by Blenker, numbering about 6,000. I see from the Enquirer, that you say “they arrested W. H. Gaines.” This is a mistake. * They did not arrest him, but sent two Dutchmen down, with two old broken down horses and put them in his stable, and led out his two horses, worth 8500, and took them off, and would not pay him for them. In fact, they stole everything they could lay their hands on in the shape of hor ses, bay, corn, oats, chickens, etc. Some th^ would give a certificate promising to pay, provi ded they would go to Washington after it, and take the oath, which was but a mockery, j They took from Messrs. Harmen & Finks all - the drugs that were of any importance, in their '• store, and gave Mr. Finks a certificate for the ; amount, promising to pay if he would take the oath, which, of course, he refused to do. Dr. ^ Stephens, the other druggist, had no one sleeping in his store, and they at night broke it open and took nearly everything in it. They left on tht^ next morning (Monday) leaving about twenty sick with neither food nor medicine. They halted about six miles above here, on the farms of G. W. F. Smith, Eustace and Joseph JeflFries, and Mr. Lake, where they destroyed everything they could. Thousands of dollars will not cover damages done to Mr. Smith, as they took and destroyed in sheer wantonness. They even backed their horses down into the basement of his dwelling house. Among the heaviest losers in this county are: J. G. Beale, (about ^35,000;) ^ U. P. Ficklin, W. E. Franklin, W. H. Gaiijes, (in negroes, etc., about fifteen thousand;) James Blackwell, (very heavy;) Dempsey Padgett, Mon- cure E. Nutt, (all of bis negroes;) Doctor and Capt. Murray, (in the army,) lose heavily in corn, hay, sheep, oats and furniture, &c. The enemy even broke up the piano. But it is useless to enumerate^ as they are traveling all over the county with their wagons, taking all the proven der they can find. \Ve had one hundred and twelve cavalry on us yesterday and last night. They put up on private citizens and in the hotels, but paid nothing. I hope it will not be long before they are run out of this country. If they are not, ice will have to leave or starve. An Army of Ojfice Ilunters.—Since the or ganization of the Provisional Government and the Permanent Government, there have been filed at the various Departments, as we are informed, nineteen thou.sand applications for offices—all willing to “serve their country.” Who saya we are not a patriotic people?—Richmond A i\ew IjIvw Book* Cantu'eirs Praelire at Mjnw.
